Institute of Excellence for Human Resource Development in Agriculture and allied fields
The Farmers’ Training Institute (FTI) of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore (UAS (B)) was established in the year 1967 with the main objective of imparting training for farmers. The Institute organizes both institutional and peripatetic training programmes. The General Extension Services (GES) programmes are sponsored by Department of Agriculture, Government of Karnataka with the operational jurisdiction of Bangalore Rural and Ramanagara districts. Sponsoring agencies who have utilized the services of this Institute are Department of Agriculture Command Area Development Authority (CADA)-Mysore.
Mandate
  • Technically empower the farmers / farm women for good agricultural practices
Objectives
  • To impart trainings on agriculture and allied subjects
  • To provide farm advisory services to the farmers
Activities
  • Institutional trainings of 01 day to 05 days duration based on the subjects
  • Off-campus training programmes of 1-2 days duration (Village based)
  • Training programmes for extension workers, SHG members and both institutional and village levels
  • Specialized trainings based on the need of development departments viz. Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences, Sericulture, Watershed Development etc. The subjects covered are Contract Farming, Organic Farming, Rain Water Harvesting, Agricultural Machineries, Integrated Farming System, Integrated Nutrient Management, Integrated Pest and Disease Management, Bio-fuels, Agri-entrepreneurship, Value addition, Fodder production, Water Management, Post Harvest Technology etc.
  • Specialized trainings for field level functionaries of development departments on agriculture and allied aspects based on demand.
  • Organizing Workshops, Farmers – Scientists interactions, Seminars etc.
  • Organizing special days related to agriculture
  • Collaboration with different Research Projects

Training Approach
Training is a specialized kind of education, which is skill oriented. It is education for a very specific purpose, where the end product is pre-determined based on performance. The concern is to enhance the ability of an individual to accomplish a set of tasks by providing an opportunity which results in acquiring the new and upgraded ability in performing the skills. The participants are members of the communication network, feel at ease, participate actively, share experiences, ask questions, take risks during training, they use trainer as resource and mentor.
The modus operandi carried for each of the training programme are ice breaking; registration, orientation, need assessment and pre-evaluation; curriculum development / training module development; presentation of topics through participatory methods using various training techniques by resource persons; experience sharing with progressive farmers or sucess studies; Field visit to research demonstration plots, Institutes, input organizations, progressive farmers’ fields, etc; Group task, discussion and presentation; Post - evaluation and feed back and follow up.
