Department of Kannada Studies

Department of Kannada Studies (DKS) was started at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore 1969-70 to publish agricultural literature in Kannada in line with the recommendations of the National Education Policy of Education commission to promote regional languages along with the National Language. Commission for Scientific Terminology (CSTT) is providing grants every year for the publication of Text Books / Reference Books in regional languages. The department. has published more than 400 books on Agriculture and allied subjects. The Department of Kannada Studies is vested with the responsibility of editing and publication of books in Kannada pertaining to Agriculture and allied subjects for the benefit of Farmers, Students, Scientists, Extension workers, and others. In addition, the department undertakes the responsibility of preparing Kannada versions of the University’s annual reports and convocation material. The Department has started teaching Kannada Subject 2015-16 for 1st year Under Graduate Students for 2 semesters. A separate course for non-Kannada Students is also being taught in Kannada usage and communication.

Kannada Krishi Books Award

The Dept. of Kannada Studies invited Books on Agriculture in Kannada published during the year 2019 throughout the State and the best book was awarded with Kannada Krishi Pustaka Prashasthi. This year ‘Mannina Gelathi’ written by Smt. Bharathi Hegde was awarded as the Best Book with a cash prize of Rs.10,000 during the 55th Foundation Day of UASB.

The Kannada Development Committee is the advisory body of the University level under the chairmanship of the Director of Education.

As per the Orders of the Department of Higher Education and Higher Education Council, Government of Karnataka that Kannada must be taught as a subject in all Technical Universities of Karnataka, UAS Bangalore has started teaching Kannada as a subject for two semesters for the First Year Under Graduate Students of all disciplines in all its Campuses from the academic year 2015-16. Non-Kannada Students of the University are being taught through a separate course.

Mandate

  • To publish text books and reference books on agriculture and related subjects in regional language.
  • To publish agricultural and related literature for the benefit of farmers, extension personnel and general public.
  • To prepare glossaries of technical terms of agriculture.

Activities

  • Publication of textbooks and reference books in Kannada on agriculture and related subjects.
  • Publication of books on agriculture and related subjects under ‘Krishi Jnana Bhandara Maalike’.
  • Preparation and publication of glossaries of technical terms related to agriculture.
  • Conducting workshops and seminars to prepare glossaries and technical writing in regional language.
  • Teaching Kannada as a subject for two semesters for the First Year Under Graduate Kannada and Non-Kannada Students of all disciplines.
  • Attend university translation work
