AICRP Scheme/Unit : AINP on Arid Legumes
Location : ZARS, GKVK, Bengaluru
Year of Start : 1995 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mandate :
Crop Improvement : 1.To develop genotypes suited to low input and low soil moisture situations. 2.In view to utilize better agro-climatic situations and to expend cultivation areas, genotypes responding to high inputs will also be identified. 3.Utilize the available germplasm screening for early maturity (cowpea 65-70 days, Horsegram 80-85 days) having drought escape mechanism. 4.Breeding for Thermo-insensitivity, particularly in Horsegram. 5.Development of varieties suited to long range adaptation, sole cropping systems and to satisfy wide array of farming communities. Agronomy : 1. Development of production technologies for off season situations (early and late onset of monsoon rains), enhancing resource efficiency in rainfed conditions. 2. To find out major production constraints for realization of satisfactory yield in relation to location specific situations and for different cropping systems. 3.To investigate the agronomic requirements of released or the varieties in the pipeline of release. 4.To investigate ways and means for optimizing yield production in relation to per unit of soil moisture, land and time. |

Research Programmes:
1. Breeding work on Cowpea and Horse gram 2. Agronomical intervention on Cowpea andHorse gram |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Research Accomplishments :
(Varieties released /Technologies developed / Patents developed/ Commercialized etc.) I. Varieties in Cowpea & Horse gram
II. Production technology v Agronomic practices like optimum seed rate, spacing and fertilizer dose were worked out.Timely sowing of recommended varieties of cowpea with 25:50:25 NPK kg/ha in 45×10 cm spacing followed by one or two inter cultivations for higher yield in cowpea. v Taking up line sowing of horse gram (with improved varieties) in 30 cm row spacing instead of broadcasting the seeds, with 25:38:25 NPK kg/ha followed by one or two inter cultivation, can get double the yield of horse gram to that of farmer’s practice as they are growing only local varieties. v When horse gram and cowpea inter cropped with castor or ragi in 6:1 row proportions showed higher economic returns. v Soil application of ZnSo4 @ 25 kg/ha (alternate year) as basal dose to obtain higher grain yield of cowpea. v Pre-emergence application of pendimethal in @ 0.75 kg a.i./ha followed by one hand weeding at 30-35DAS was found good for getting economic returns with efficient weed control. v Post-emergence application of imazethapyr+imazamox @ 40g a.i./ha at 20-25 DAS followed by one inter cultivation is beneficial for getting better weed control and economic returns. |
