Neurodegeneration and Neuroprotection: Neurodegeneration involves loss of Neurons either by necrosis or cell death. There are several Neurodegenerative Diseases that includes Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s diseases, Amyo-lateral sclerosis, Huntington disease etc. Many factors are implicated to death of neurons; beta-amyloid has gained much importance in recent days. The beta-amyloid casuses neurotoxicity by causing imbalance in Ca2+ homeostasis, oxidative stress, indirectly causing neuroinflammation etc. Beta-amyloid once produces from amyloid precursor protein (APP) under goes series of self aggregation process leading to Amyloid fibrils. Recent drug discovery programs mostly targeted beta-amyloid production or prevention Beta-amyloid aggregation. Our Lab is mainly working on following research areas. A) Novel natural molecules that prevent beta-amyloid production either by enhancing alpha secretases processing of APP or by inhibiting beta-and gamma secretases processing of APP. B) Novel natural molecules that prevent Beta-amyloid aggregation. C) Novel natural molecules that act as multi target directed Ligands (MTDLs) in AD drug discovery. D) Neuroinflammation in AD.
