Academic Programs

Background: Chamarajanagar district was established on 15th August 1997 on the occasion of the birth of the last ruler of the Mysore dynasty, Sri Jayachamaraja Wodeyar. Earlier, the Chamarajanagar district was a taluk headquarters in Mysore district. Chamarajanagar district currently has five taluk centers namely Gundlupet, Kollegala, Chamarajanagar, Yalandur and Hanur. Here, turmeric, ginger, banana, sugarcane, onion, beetlewine and other commercial crops are grown in borewell irrigation. The traditional crops like finger millet, sorghum, paddy, horsegram, redgram, cowpea groundnut, cotton, sunflower and silk crop are grown all over the Chamarajanagar district. The annual rainfall is 705 mm and falls from May to September, with sandy red soil and medium black soil are predominant.
Establishment of the College: By recognizing the importance of agricultural education in rural areas, the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore has rightly selected Chamarajanagar as an ideal location to start Agriculture College. The district has geographical area of 5648 sq. km with varied agro-climatic conditions congenial for growing various field as well as fruits and plantation crops. To lead the district in agriculture development the Government of Karnataka has given administrative approval to establish a new agricultural college at chamarajanagar under the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore during the academic year 2018-19. On the auspicious day of 27-08-2018 a new College of Agriculture at KVK, Campus, Haradanahalli Farm, Chamarajanagar was inaugurated and in the academic year first batch of B.Sc (Hons)Agri was started. Every year 30 to 35 students are taken and now the first second and third year students are studying in the campus. The college has dedicated faculty and staff, bright students with excellent records in academic, sports and cultural activities. The College of Agriculture, Chamarajanagar is imparting education in the field of Agriculture to rural students and developing global leaders who are confident, smart, intelligent and engaged with a life full of positiveness. The campus premises is also having Krishi Vigyan Kendra and All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Sorghum and Cotton are continuously conducting teaching research and extension programmes which provide more opportunities to the students to acquiring the knowledge.
Course duration and Admission policy: The College of Agriculture, Chamarajanagar is presently offering BSc (Hons) Agriculture degree programme and duration is four years (eight semesters). The admission procedure has been clearly defined in line with Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) norms. The students has to select PCMB as a background in Pre University Course (PUC) and should take common entrance test (CET) conducted by Karnataka Examination Authority, Government of Karnataka. Based on the CET rankings students are selected for perusing B.Sc.(Hons)Agri and there will be 40 % reservation for the students from rural farming background to acquire the seats. The students who study Agriculture Degree programme are undergoing through set of curriculum which comprise not only theory but also practical which help them in acquiring the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience.
Academic Programme and Curriculum: The college of Agricultural, Chamarajanagara is offering B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture degree programme since its inception, in English Medium. It has followed the academic regulation and course curriculum as prescribed by the UAS (Bangalore) and ICAR. The students admitted to B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture degree programme must complete the 22 courses and 183 compulsory credits and must get 6.00 grade out of 10.00 (OGPA). They study basic courses and applied courses related to agriculture and also undergo crop production programme in two semesters. Hasiru Dharana is a programme adopted by the University and every student in the first year of graduation is given the responsibility of planting and maintaining each species of plants for four years and when the student complete his graduation in the final year provided with the photograph of Plant and Hasiru Dharana certificate.
Rural Entrepreneurship, Awareness and Development Yojana
To provide practical training and rural agricultural experience to the final year students, the practical/Experience learning programme in 7th semester and the Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE) programme in the 8th semester will be conducted. Under the Experienced Learning/ Hands on training (HoT) Programme, students can earn along with the practical exposure and can select the HoT programmes like vermi compost production, mushroom cultivation, seed production and technology, commercial sericulture, production technology for biofertilizers. In the final year they will be placed in villages under Rural Agricultural Work Experience Programs (RAWEP) for three months as a part of the course curriculum. The students stay in the villages for a period of three months and organize field visits, animal health campaigns, training programs and crop seminars where scientists from Agricultural College, Krishi Vigyan Kendra participate as resource persons and besides one NSS camp will be organized.
Educational tour: A 15-day academic tour for agricultural students every year is organized to various states of the country. Students will visit the Agricultural Universities of various states, national and international research stations and extension institutions to acquire the knowledge about the agriculture research and extension activities going on in the different states. Students also learn the culture and social lifestyle of farmers of different states.

Student’s Scholarships: ICAR-NTS scholarships, GOI scholarships, UAS scholarships, Vidhyasiri scholarships from GOK, Student Aid Fund, will be awarded to the meritorious students of the University.

1. Can pursue higher studies like M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Agriculture and Allied Sciences.
2. Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and other institutions offer various fellowships like Junior Research/Senior Research Fellowships with the facility of money and free eye access to higher education at various universities of the country.
3. Can serve as Scientists in ICAR and CSIR Research Institutes, Universities and Karnataka State Agriculture Department and are also eligible for jobs in all Government sector departments.
4. Are eligible for Civil Service Exams like IAS, IPS, IFS and KAS etc…
5. Can act as officers in Agriculture and Agriculture related departments and Banks of Government of Karnataka
6. Can also work in seed, fertilizer, agricultural and pharmaceutical companies, MNC’s and in Non-Government organizations.
7. Can ensure self-employment in various areas like production of planting materials, processed food products and consultancy services.
8. As a model or progressive former can guide farmers in there betterment.

Student’s facilities and amenities:

Student Counselors: The group of students will be allotted to the experienced professors as counselors. They will periodically review the academic progress of the students and inform their report to the parents and also the head of the college. They advise in a manner which is advisable for all round development of the students.

Placement cell: College has placement cell which plays a very important role in counselling and guiding the students for their career prospect. To provide employment opportunities to graduate students, the job opportunities are established at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, every year through various private companies and associations graduated are selected trough written examinations, group discussion and interview. The students who have graduated will get the necessary guidance and help if they register the details in the cell.

Infrastructure: In the existing campus, the required infrastructures are being developed to impart quality teaching. The college has 4 classrooms which are well equipped with LCD projectors, CCTV cameras and 3 well equipped laboratories to conduct practical classes. Students also have field visits for their crop development programme.

Computer Lab and Library: The library and computer laboratory is located within the college premises and has 1996 textbooks and 5 periodical use facilities for students and staff of various subjects. College has computer laboratory with 13 computers for practical training with good internet and database facilities. CERA( Consortium of e-resources in Agriculture) is in use and has the facility to get information on current affairs, statistics and agricultural research papers/books. Further, students and teachers can also utilize the computer and internet facilities available in class preparation and other educational related activities.

Hostel Facilities: Separate hostel facilities are established for Boys in a hired building near campus and for Girls in Krishi Vigyan Kendra campus respectively. Both the hostels are having the facilities of CCTV, separate TV room, reading room and gym hall and also provided with solar hot water, RO drinking water and balanced hygienic vegetarian and Non-vegetarian nutritious food.

Sports and Cultural Activities: The College not only ensures academic development of the students but also provides them with opportunities to prove themselves by means of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities. Hence Physical education and NSS is compulsory for all the graduating students. The college magazine provides the students a platform to showcase their talents and capabilities. Along with this students are encouraged to participate in Intercollegiate and national level sports meet and Youth Festival conducted by the University.

Land Facilities for Practical exposure: Forty-eight acres of land is available for the practical learning of students, in which KVK, All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Sorghum and Cotton and students experimental plots are there. Practical Benefits are available for the students under the guidance of professor, students undergo practical training on various crops like Ragi, Jowar, Redgram, Paddy, Turmeric and other crops.

Extension Activities: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra in the college premises is functioning as a single roof for farmers and extension workers to provide complete information which they need. Where, scientists of various agricultural subjects are conducting demonstrations released technologies in farmer fields, crop field and demonstration skill and training programmes for farmers and extension workers.

Rural Agricultural Working Experience Programme (RAWEP): The final year students are staying in the village for about 3 months under the Rural Agricultural Working Experience camp and at present the camp was successfully conducted in 2 villages of Chamarajanagar taluk.

Hands on Training: A Hands on Training program for about 5 months has been promised to the final year students and in the current year one group of 16 students are being taught about production technology of bio pesticides and biofertilizers and another group of 16 students are being taught about commercial production of horticultural crops and production of organic fertilizers.

Research: Research in jowar and cotton is being conducted in the All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Sorghum and Cotton in the College premises and research programmes are being conducted for high yield and pest/ disease resistance and also to .
