Department of Agronomy

The Department of Agronomy, College of Agriculture, GKVK is offering under-graduate courses for B. Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture, B. Sc. (Hons.) Agricultural Marketing and B. Tech. (Agricultural Engineering) and PG courses for M. Sc. (Agri.) and Ph. D. degree programmes.

To cater the needs of B. Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture students, 10 courses with 21 credit hours have been designed dealing with all aspects of Agronomy. Further, the final year students are undergoing hands on training (HoT) on organic production technology and integrated farming system (IFS) with 10 credit hours each.

For M. Sc. (Agri.) programme, 12 courses with 24 credits and for Ph. D. program 8 courses with 16 credits have been designed. Similarly, the PG students have to register for additional research (50 and 70 credits for M.Sc. and Ph. D., respectively) and qualifying exam (2 and 5 credits for M.Sc. and Ph. D., respectively). As per the BSMA recommendations the research credits for M. Sc. (Agri.) and Ph. D. is 27 credits and 72 credits, respectively from the academic year 2022-23.

The department is having experienced teachers with requisite skills to offer the PG courses and guide the PG students in their specialized fields of research. The department possesses well developed field unit to conduct practical classes and well equipped laboratory for hands on training to expose students to various aspects of Agronomy.

Infrastructure Available

Adequate field facilities have been created for practical crop production and for conducting field experiments in about 17 ha at GKVK. Out of which, about 5 ha of land has irrigation facilities.

  • Well-equipped laboratory is available to take up chemical analysis of plants /soil.
  • Soil and water conservation structures have been created for handling practical classes both at UG & PG level.
  • Irrigation structures have been designed for practical training of students.
  • Meteorological prototype models for handling practical classes.
  • All traditional and improved implements are available for practical training of students.
  • Sophisticated Gadgets like Leaf area meter, Auto-N analyzer and BOD incubator are available for PG research.
  • Computers with internet facility has been created for staff and PG students.
  • Well furnished PG seminar halls (2 Nos.) with necessary audio-visual aids for conducting PG classes and seminars.
