Introduction
In Karnataka, Tumkur district comes under the central dry zone with rainfall ranging from 419 to 723 mm per annum. In this district Pavagada parts of Sira, Koratagere and Madhugiri are the backward taluks having most of cultivated area under rainfed situation with average annual rainfall of 577.8 mm during 2013-14. Pavagada taluk lies to the northeast of Tumkur district at 140-05’ N latitude, 770-05’ E Longitude &Altitude of 768 meters from MSL. Soils are hard and poor and main soil types are sandy, sandy loam, red, gravelly, sandy clay loam and black soil. The major area of the rainfed situation in these taluk is covered by groundnut, Redgram and Castor and dryland horticultural crops viz mango, tamarind, pomegranate.
After the successful implementation of ORP Project on the management of red- headed hairy caterpillar in groundnut, further to continue the long term research work in groundnut and other dryland crops and find solutions to farmer problems, a proposal to establish permanent Agricultural Research Station at Pavagada was submitted to the Government by UAS, GKVK, Bangalore. During 2009, with a budgetary allocation of Rs.10 crores under RKVY funds Government of Karnataka sanctioned the proposal to establish Agricultural Research Station at Pavagada with the main objective to identify and tackle the problems faced by groundnut growers of Pavagada, Madhugiri, Sira and Koratagere taluks of Tumkur district.
Objectives:
  • To introduce/ evolve suitable drought tolerant alternate crops viz., oilseeds, pulses and dry land horticultural crops.
  • To evolve and screen for suitable drought tolerant groundnut, red gram and other pulse varieties.
  • To increase the productivity of soil through development of INM practices and cropping systems.
  • To develop low cost IPDM technologies in control of disease and pests.
  • To conduct front line demonstrations and farm trials.
