Research Programmes:
Ø PC Unit, Small millets has recognized as a national active germplasm site. Its main mandate is to collection, evaluation, conservation and supply of germplasm accessions to needy scientists in different centers. We have maintained 4450, 1301, 965, 1003, 611, 1750 and 128 accessions of finger millet, kodo millet, barnyard millet, little millet, proso millet, foxtail millet and browntop millet respectively. Ø Development of high yielding varieties with early and medium duration, disease resistance, nutrient rich and suitable to different climatic conditions in small millets Ø Diversification of Partial male sterile lines in different background Ø Identification of donors with new source of resistance for blast in finger millet Ø Application of molecular tools for characterizing blast pathogen in finger millet and rust in foxtail millet Ø Investigation on diseases of Brown top millet crop Ø Large scale screening of small millet germplasm for pest resistance Ø Bio-geographical mapping of shoot flies Ø Nutrient management in small millets Ø Nutri-cereals performance(recently released varieties) for contingent cropping during late kharif Ø Performance and economic evaluation of farm machinery for finger millet harvesting Ø Effective weed management strategies in small millets Ø Precision farming in Finger millet and Foxtail millet; Moisture conservation in small millets |

Research Accomplishments :
(Varieties released /Technologies developed / Patents developed/ Commercialized etc…) Ø Germplasm accessions were characterized in foxtail millet, kodo millet, proso millet, little millet and barnyard millet and published catalogues in each millet. Ø DUS Guidelines have been prepared for finger millet, kodo millet, barnyard millet, little millet, proso millet and foxtail millet and published in PPV &FRA, New Delhi. Ø Nodal centre to conduct FLDs, DUS testing and Bio fortification Ø Conducted extensive study on survey and taxonomy of insect-pests of small millets with special reference to shoot fly in small millets. Varieties released in Small millets :
Varieties recommended for release during 2022-23 at state level : · One variety in Browntop millet (GPUBT 2) was accepted for release in ZREP meeting held on 20 th April, 2022 ((Zone 5) and 4th May, 2022 (Zone 6). · Two varieties- one each in Little (GPUL 11) and Proso millet (GPUP 32) were recommended for release in Plant Scientists Meet-2022-23 meeting held on 15-17Feb 2023 at College of Hassan. Varieties registered under Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act
Registration of genetic stocks: Pre released varieties of Proso millet, Little millet, foxtail millet and Browntop millet and germplasm accessions of small millets were sent to NBPGR for issuing national identity number and received IC number.
Finger millet blast resistant lines were identified in association with other millet pathologist working at IIMR, Hyderabad and other coordinated centres and identified blast resistant lines were registered with NBPGR, New Delhi
